Best Tips For Saving Money in Las Vegas

David C. Reynolds asked:

Some of these tips apply to every destination but since Las Vegas is such a unique and highly popular destination, a primer on what to expect there makes for a great article. These are steps you can take to streamline your visit which should make it all the more enjoyable.

Getting a good air fare is primary. Because Las Vegas is so popular, usually booking at the last minute will cost you much more than booking in advance. However, booking TOO far in advance might cause you to get trapped by the airlines desire to get higher rates until they find they need to lower fares. Traveling on a Saturday is usually less congested in Las Vegas and most fares are lower on weekends or when they require a Saturday stayover, but the offset is that hotels in Las Vegas are usually priced MUCH higher on weekends and particularly Saturday nights than on any other nights. One way around this is to just stay at a motel far off the Strip for Saturday night and avoid the Strip crowds completely that night. Rates for the luxury properties in Las Vegas are presently offered at a huge discount and hotels normally charging $200-$400 per night might be as low as $79-$129.00. Many offer a 3rd or 4th night free on regular rates and if regular rate is $150, this is akin to getting it for $100 per night.

Be careful of Third Party ‘package’ deals. They can save you some money sometimes but generally they offer lower rated, less popular properties and flight times that would alarm a night owl. Like 6:00 am or 11:30 pm. If you are a frequent visitor to Las Vegas, you should be a member of hotels reward programs or at the least, sign up for Players Club type programs at casinos. Their promotions can often save you money for these as well.

Lastly, look into online discount coupons and promotions and show tickets reserved in advance. This may be your only way to score a hot ticket other than dealing with scalpers and you should be aware that the fraud rate for tickets is fairly high in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. So you definitely do not want to buy tickets from a guy “at the fountain” who is giving you 30% off.

If you are generally not a big gambler and have all day to explore the town, you might consider a day tour. In summer, you can only spend so much time at the pool in the hot sun and walking the Strip is usually going to have you back in your room exhausted within a couple of hours. Look for Strip shuttles to downtown if you like more pedestrian gambling. For dining, even if alcohol is free at casinos, restaurants are usually expensive so what you save on one hand comes out of your other pocket eventually. Buffets are usually recommended for budget travelers but many of the better buffets are as costly as restaurants. You should check out delis in hotels for hot dogs and pizza (for the kids of course) and for less expensive but filling pastas and sandwiches.

These travel tips should save you money and stretch your vacation dollar just a little bit further.

Las Vegas Vacation – Tips, Tricks and Cautions

Dennis Lauritsen asked:

These “cautions”, “tips”, and “tricks” are offered to help make your Las Vegas Vacation as enjoyable, fast and easy to plan as possible. Whether this is your first trip to “Fabulous Las Vegas” or you are a veteran, you’ll find some useful tips and tricks here.

Las Vegas Travel Tips: First and foremost, the biggest mistake many travelers to Las Vegas make in planning a trip is to book the cheapest air fare/hotel package “available anywhere”. These are offered everywhere from your hometown newspaper to television ads to especially, e-mail spam. Beware!

Why? A Cheap Las Vegas Vacation is good, we agree! BUT, did you know virtually all Las Vegas Hotels have 2- 3 levels of room quality (or options)? Now, we mean even many of the five star, “big ones” many of these are just plain substandard rooms, maybe with a nice view of the air conditioning system! (This actually happened to me personally, and was it Loud!)

Things like older bed mattresses, no safes, old decorating, long walks to the casino, restraunts, shows, or even a taxi. Did you know there are monorail trains running right behind some of the rooms? How about a roller coaster right outside your window? And lots more. Just remember “cheapest” is just that. Ask at the front desk at check-in exactly where your room is, look at it before signing in if possible.

We aren’t pushing for only high dollar rooms here, just get the best quality room your budget will allow, you will be very glad you did.

Why book your Hotel first? Las Vegas is booked up an average of 94% year round, so plan ahead (at least 30+ days is recommended) to get the exact days you want, where you want, room quality you want. Plus, usually it’s less expensive to book well in advance. Did you know that Sunday through Thursday is less expensive? When you get your selected Las Vegas Hotel booked, then you can book a flight to fit the days in and out to fit YOUR schedule.

Makes sense doesn’t it?

Once you get your Las Vegas Hotel booked first. Then you can book the Las Vegas Shows that you want, when you want. Be sure to check to see if your particular show choice isn’t “dark” on your selected days. Holidays are a good example of dark days.

Then book your Las Vegas Tour. (If you have never experienced the thrill of a Helicopter Ride at night over “Glitter Gulch and Downtown”, or a daytime trip over the Boulder Dam and Grand Canyon this is something you will never forget!) It isn’t as expensive as you might think! Check our tours links for prices and times.

This is the entertainment capital of the World, so allow yourself enough time to take in as many attractions (dozens are free) as possible, it will make your Las Vegas Vacation much more memorable. If possible, book an extra night stay just to allow for a special Las Vegas Tour or a day of Las Vegas Golf.

Las Vegas Gambling Tips:

Gambling is the lifeblood of Las Vegas. You didn’t really think those billion dollar hotels were built by “winners” did you? Set a daily budget for gambling and stick to it! You do have a good chance at winning. Hundreds if not thousands of “Hand Pay Jackpots” are paid every day. Be careful though, those chips, tokens and ticket-in/ticket-out seem too much like “play money” they are not they are your real money! Stick to your budget! Did I say that already?

Get a “players card” everywhere you go and use it, or if you are a “table player” ask the pit boss to “rank” or “rate” you. They will track your play and comp you accordingly with all kinds of free stuff. Such as meals, rooms, clothing, limos, gift shop points and even cash. These really help put the odds in your favor.

Seems like my “budget” is always too small, but try your best to set a reasonable daily goal and stick to it, don’t tap into tomorrows budget! Just maybe you’ll walk away a big winner! It happens every day. Remember the phrase: “Walk away when ahead”!

It’s not my place to preach, but here are some very useful Las Vegas tips on handling your money. All that cash in the casinos you see everywhere attracts some pretty shady characters (read Crooks!) Security is excellent, but there are always a few, and it just takes one to ruin a perfect vacation.

Las Vegas Security:

Ladies, bring or buy a small purse with a neck strap or waste pouch, or fanny pack, something that is comfortable enough to keep on your person all the time. Never ever set your purse on the floor or next to a machine, or on a stool next to you. This is a magnet for thieves! Keep that strap around your neck.

Most thieves work in pairs, one to distract you, the other to snag your purse. Just a couple types of distractions they use are: one will drop a coin or dollar bill or two near you on the floor and ask you “is that your cash on the floor?” while the other grabs your stuff, or overly talkative “players” will sit down next to you and jabber to get your attention, while their partner grabs your stuff, or hits the payout button and walks away with your ticket. Believe me. This does happen. They are very slick and fast, so just be aware.

When you do accumulate a couple winning tickets, hide them in your wallet or purse until you are ready to cash them in, and then stash the cash. Remember the “walk away” tip?

Men: It isn’t degrading to wear a waste pouch. Okay, if you just don’t want to, then fold your bills and keep them in your front pants pocket. If they “pickpocket” your wallet with all your credit cards in it at least you’ll have your cash, or vice versa, just keep them seperated. And, watch those tickets.

If you do hit a good size jackpot, take the money to the safe in your room or take it to the Hotel desk for safekeeping. Or, ask for a Security escort to your room or car. They are happy to provide this service. Don’t walk around the casino or streets with a big wad of cash!

The Security at all Hotels and Casinos is excellent. With all those thousands of cameras (Eyes in the sky) every inch of the casino is being taped continuously. (Did you know that Nevada law requires casinos to have this level of security?) It is for your protection as well as the Hotel/Casino.

Now please understand, we are not trying to scare you away here, but rather just make you aware! It is real easy to get caught up in all the flashing lights, noise, overhead shows, people watching and normal distractions of a casino. Just don’t give them an opportunity to ruin your fun.

Follow these Las Vegas Travel Tips and they will make your Las Vegas Vacation a lifetime memory.

Frugal Travel Tips For Las Vegas Attractions

Kimber Chin asked:

I don’t gamble so I often get asked why I visit Las Vegas at least once a year. The answer? The free attractions make Las Vegas a frugal traveler’s paradise (and we’ll save the dining discussion for another article). Almost every casino has some sort of freebie gimmick to attract gamblers. In this article, I will cover, what I consider to be the must-see’s to give tourists a flavor of Las Vegas.

The Fountain Show At Bellagio

With nightfall comes the fountain shows at Bellagio. In the massive pool of water on the Strip side of the casino, illuminated spirts of water dance to a variety of music, popular, classical and even opera. They usually operate every 15 minutes (check with the casino to ensure), with a different song and show each time.

Sirens Of TI

Every night, in front of Treasure Island on the Strip, a battle takes place between sexy sirens and renegade male pirates. There are usually four identical kid friendly shows nightly. Get there early for best viewing (especially if you are vertically challenged). Stand close and you could get a bit wet.

Circus Circus Shows

Approximately every half hour in the Circus Circus casino on the Strip, there are free yet world class midway acts including jugglers and trapeze acts. I stayed for three shows and all three were different.

Freemont Street Experience

Las Vegas is more than the Strip. Situated in the heart of downtown, the historic Freemont Street Experience is a pedestrian walkway, covered by what they bill as the biggest big screen on the planet. There are street performers, vendors and every night at multiple times, a light and sound show.

Ethel M’s Chocolate Tour And Botanical Cactus Garden

Want to get away from the Strip yet do something free? Check out the Ethel M Chocolate Factory (One Sunset Way). A must for chocolate connoisseurs (I have purchased chocolate from all over the world for my Mom, her favorite is Ethel M’s), there is a self guided tour, free samples, and products for sale.

Outside there is the Botanical Cactus Garden with over 350 kinds of cacti, succulents from the local area and around the world (also free admission).

Note: There is an Ethel M’s at the airport if you are concerned about chocolate melting (check hours of operation as every time I go, its closed).

There are many, many other free attractions in Las Vegas. Attractions that are changed often to ensure the city remains fresh, exciting and a frugal traveler’s paradise.

Helpful Tips to Make Your Las Vegas Walk and Sightseeing More Enjoyable

Peter Sandler asked:

It’s important to keep in mind that Las Vegas is smack dab in the middle of a desert; thus, dry and comfortable, warm and dry, dry and hot; the keyword is… dry. It’s so easy with “dry” to become dehydrated so be sure you drink lots of water and take some with you. When you go into a casino and ask the bartender to get you a glass of water, they may shake their heads and wonder what you are thinking. You certainly don’t want to die of thirst before you actually find a water faucet to get your water.

Consider walking the strip length, as there is much to see and enjoy. However, you need to understand that the buildings at the end of the boulevard are huge, which makes them look close enough to get to. Your eyes can play tricks on you so it’s important that you know the actual distance from place to place.

Miles calculated from south to north:

Flamingo to Treasure Island -.8
Mandalay Bay to Tropicana -.8
Riviera to Sahara -.6
Sahara to Stratosphere -.2
Stardust to Riviera -.3
Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay – < 4.0
Treasure Island to Stardust -.5
Tropicana to Flamingo – 1.0

If you want to get a great workout, then you’ll want to go from the Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay to get it.

What To Wear When You Walk In Las Vegas

While Las Vegas can get hot during the summer, the heat is dry. Yes, a 100 degree temperature is hot no matter which way it’s described. However, walk into any casino and the temperature is going to drop awfully fast. Thus, you’ll need to get creative when it comes to the clothes you wear. You certainly don’t want to wear a sweater when you go outside and you don’t want to wear tank top in a casino; to make it even… wear a light jacket in the casino and carry it with you when are outside.

Whatever you do, never forget the sunscreen. Regardless of the time of year you visit, you need to bring it along with you. If are visiting during the winter season, you’ll want to bring along some winter clothes. You may not see a lot of snow but the thermometer will drop and when it gets cold and the wind picks up, the “feel like” thermometer can drop even lower, faster.

Be Safe When Walking In Las Vegas

When you’re walking, you’re going to notice a lot of traffic along the strip. Las Vegas drivers won’t slow down until they come upon a crosswalk. If you decide to “jaywalk”, a fatal accident could occur. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled out for cars and use the pedestrian walkways whenever you can at the busy intersections; city officials have placed more of these out to reduce the potential danger.

Just remember that walking around in Vegas gives you a bit of flexibility, which means you can walk into any casino anytime you want, put down the money and leave… a winner. Above all else…be sure you drink lots of water.

7 Tips to Gamble Responsibly and Not Lose Your Shirt

Peter Fisher asked:

Apart from becoming a major financial disaster, when someone gets addicted to gambling, whether online or offline, the obsession may just cost him his family, friends and his whole social life. Who wants to be caught up in problems like that?

Gambling is supposed to be fun, not something that will ruin your life, so gamble responsibly and don’t lose your shirt. Here are 7 tips on responsible gambling:

1. Set a Loss Limit

This is being responsible not just being pessimistic. You must keep tabs on your losses and give yourself a loss limit which you can afford. And stick to it strictly. As well as setting a loss limit, setting yourself a time limit will also make you a smarter gambler.

2. Don’t Ask Anyone for More Funds

Never asking for some borrowed money to continue gambling means you must stop when you reach your limit. If you have determined a quite convenient loss limit, you will never have to borrow money to gamble.

3. Take a Break

Frequent breaks while playing online will not only help you to relax, they will also give you time to think about how much you may have been losing. If you’re losing and can’t afford to lose more then quit.

4. Don’t Just Gamble, Socialize a Little

Other activities such as chatting with a new acquaintance or some old friend who also happens to visit the casino, may be time well spent. You don’t need to feel guilty about not gambling the whole night through. Practicing your shared experiences is also a good way to spend some of the time. Who knows what you might have done but were too hooked up rolling the dice.

5. Never Play When Depressed and Stressed

In the same way as shopping and eating, it’s never a good idea to use gambling as an antidote for your woes or troubles. Gambling when you are feeling low will not solve your problems. It might even propel it to some massive problem you never intended it to be.

6. Say No to Ruining Your Budget Just Because Of Gambling

Stay within the budget you allocated for the entertainment value you get from gambling. Money for everyday household expenses should never be touched. If it’s your craving to roll the dice that you are trying to satisfy, you must be sure you can afford it.

7. Don’t Go Chasing Your Losses

Recognition of the fact that you have lost is the most responsible and mature way to deal with any problem, particularly losing when gambling. If you start trying to chase your losses, the most likely outcome is that you lose even more.

Gambling should not be taken lightly, gamble responsibly and not lose your shirt. Remember that casinos are not charity houses that intend to give away money. They are there as a business and make their money out of the gamblers’ losses.

Las Vegas Vacation Tips

Cait Farrell asked:

First time in Las Vegas? Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world – there’s no other place like it. But if you’ve never been there before, you could end up missing the best Vegas has to offer or worse – spending more money than you’d planned.

If you’re booking your first Las Vegas vacation, the following tips will save you time, money and frustration.

Vacation Tip #1: Book Your Vegas Package Early

Try to make your reservations and ticket purchases at least 21 days before your trip. Some fares require an advance purchase of 3, 7, 14, or 21 days, while others may require no advance purchase at all.

Also, many Las Vegas hotels give you a discount incentive for booking your vacation early. As more people book the hotel rooms, there are less spots available and prices can rise.

Vacation Tip #2: Bring High Quality Running Shoes

If you’re going to be exploring the gorgeous hotels and various attractions on the Las Vegas strip – make sure you take high quality, well-fitting running shoes. Most of the surfaces you’ll be walking on are either concrete or stone.

While it’s lovely to stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Venetian or the Paris hotels – if you’re in shoes that don’t give you adequate cushioning you’ll be in pain by the end of the day. And after 3 days, forget about it.

Vacation Tip #3: If It’s Your First Time In Vegas Try To Stay On Or Near The Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas strip is the best place to be – especially if it’s your first time in Las Vegas. Enjoy the fountains of the Bellagio, see the lion habitat at the MGM Grande, watch the pirate show at the Treasure Island, view the white tigers at the Mirage.

When you’re on the Las Vegas strip most of the attractions and hotels are within walking distance so you don’t need to rent a car. Staying at one of the hotels on the strip will ensure you see most of the main attractions in Vegas.

Some hotels on the Las Vegas strip are the Bellagio, MGM Grande, Mirage, Ceasar’s Palace, Aladdin, Circus Circus, Treasure Island, Imperial Palace, Flamingo, New York New York, Bally’s and the Paris Hotel.

Vacation Tip #4: Be Prepared To Eat

Las Vegas offers some of the BEST buffets and restaurants in the world. Two of the most popular buffets in Las Vegas are the Buffet at the Bellagio and the Spice Market Buffet at the Aladdin. They are a must try!

The buffets offer a huge selection (so everyone in the family is happy)at mid-priced rates (depending on where you go). The food quality is extremely high so forego your diet and enjoy! After all, you’re on vacation.

Vacation Tip #5: You Don’t Have To Spend A Bundle On Entertainment

While some of the shows in Las Vegas can be expensive, there are lots of things to do (especially with your family) that are low cost or absolutely free. Some freebies include:

Lion habitat at the MGM Grande

White tigers at the Mirage

Fountain display in front of the Bellagio

M&M’s Store near New York, New York hotel (free M&M’s movie)

Pirate Show at Treasure Island

Rain Storm at the Dessert Passage next to the Aladdin

Circus Acts at Circus Circus

Human Statues at the Venetian

Various specialty displays and gardens inside different hotels – depending on the time of year

And they’re always adding more!

So those are 5 general tips for Vegas first-time vacationers. The can save you time, money and frustration (and hopefully sore feet). There’s no other place like Las Vegas – it’s like a giant playground for adults and kids. Regardless of what you choose to do, you’ll never forget your first time in Vegas!

Gambling in the Wild West

Laurel Louise asked:

Poker Alice and Wild Bill Hickock

Poker Alice-a woman takes a place in a man’s world

Alice Ivers Duffield Tubbs Huckert (1851-1930) was born in England. Her family moved to Virginia where she attended school to become a fine lady. Ivers’ family moved to Leadville, Colorado where she eventually met her future husband, Frank Duffield. A miner, Frank would often let her sit behind him while he was playing cards and she soon became fluent at the game-a boon to Alice’s later career. When Frank was killed in a mining accident, Alice was left to fend for herself and quickly found that her affinity for playing cards would provide for her income.

With a good head for counting cards, figuring odds and distracting male players with her looks, Alice soon became a professional gambler always seen with a cigar in her mouth. She worked gambling rooms in Alamosa, Georgetown, Trinidad, Central City and Leadville before heading south to Silver City, New Mexico.

She was also know to carry a.38 revolver with her and used it on several occasions including one in which she saved her soon to be next husband, W.G. Tubbs, by shooting a drunken miner who pulled a knife and threatened to kill him. She married Tubbs shortly after.

Perhaps the most memorable story concerned the death of Tubbs some time later. In 1910, Tubbs contracted pneumonia and died in Alice’s arms. She then drove his frozen corpse in a horse-drawn sled to Sturgis, 48 miles away, and pawned her wedding ring to pay for his funeral. After that, she went straight into the saloon, sat at the poker table and won enough money to get her ring back.

Factoid-At one time, Poker Alice worked at a saloon that was owned by Bob Ford, the man who killed Jesse James

The Wild West has many more true stories involving such legends such as Wild Bill Hickock whose famous “Aces and 8’s” hand spelled his death and the eternal name for the draw of that hand. There is another story about Wild Bill that came to be an eerie prediction of his last hand. The story goes that Wild Bill was in a poker game with a man he suspected of cheating. When the cheater called a hand and asked Bill what he had, Hickock replied, “Aces and 6’s”. Upon showing his hand, old Bill just had a pair of Aces and a 4. The cheater demanded to see Bill’s 6’s and called Bill on the Bluff where upon Bill pulled out his two six guns and said “here are my other two 6’s”, and promptly shot and killed his opponent.

Horse Betting Tips

Anthony LeMaire asked:

Most apprentices are capable of breaking a horse fast, which is great in sprint races, and the majority of their wins are usually accomplished under such circumstances. However, in route races (distance of longer than 1-1/8 miles) they usually do not perform as well. This is not necessarily because they are lacking in basic ability but because they are lacking in the experience needed to properly measure the pace of a race. An experienced jockey can enable a front-running sprinter to perform as well in longer races.

Also, give an extra point to an experienced jockey on obstacle racing than on flat racing. A jockey’s ability becomes even more important in obstacle racing because no matter how fast the horse is if the jockey falls off or the horse pulls up, the race for that horse is over. There is not even a possible second or third place.

Look for value odds as much as likely winners. If you keep looking for them, you will learn to spot them fairly quickly. Look for a horse that has a fair chance of winning and is not overly backed. This is usually a good value bet in the long run. On odds of say, 10:1, you need to win once in ten attempts to break even. Anything more is net profit. Horses backed heavily by information services and computer handicappers may win more often, but are usually poor value bets.

The offshore sportsbook sites or bookmaker webpages are very well informed and have a long experience determining the odds. Their starting prices are usually excellent indicators as to which horses are likely to be among the first three in a given race. Sometimes the mass of the punters will put a lot of weight and money on a horse which will then go to a false price and because of that the other prices of horses will drift in the market, that is get longer. As a result a horse shown favorite or second favorite in the early starting prices may then drop down the list as the start of the race approaches and his odds improve significantly, that is get longer. This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, bet on the horse that was initially favorite. It is always a good value bet and in the long run you should make a profit.

When the track is slow or heavy, give preference to fast starters. Slow, muddy and heavy track conditions usually favor the horse that takes an early lead. A straight bet is simple, manageable and not too difficult to win. Play it but always weigh up the odds. Avoid favorites and long shots (outsiders) too. Be selective – don’t bet on anything or everything. When betting straight, consider betting to win and show, or each-way, if the odds are relatively high.

If a horse is heavily backed just a few minutes before the start of the race and his odds are sharply reduced, bet on it. This is a strong indication that somebody has reliable favorable information about the horse that nobody else is aware of.

The horses to look out for in Lightweights Handicap Races are those whose overall form shows that they are capable of winning, regardless of the class of race in which they compete. Two or more wins in the form shown in newspapers are often indication of a possible big win by a low weight. An added bonus is they usually start at big prices.

When making selections, always give preference to a horse that ran recently. A horse that has not raced for several weeks may have suffered some setbacks like an injury or an illness. No matter how good his form was if it is not recent, chances are the horse will not win.

Frugal Travel Tips For Las Vegas Dining

Kimber Chin asked:

Las Vegas dining is world renown. Casinos compete with each other to provide the best dining option from the high end to the buffet to the too-good-to-be-true deals. In this article, we will explore some of the dining options for the frugal traveler.

Ellis Island $4.95 Steak Special

For $4.95, diners at Ellis Island (located on Koval Lane, East of E Flamingo Road) get a 10-ounce steak, bread, potato (choice of serving), and veggies. Must be a cheap cut right? Wrong. This steak is mouth watering. This special is not on the menu, you have to ask for it.

But that’s not what I order. I order the $6.95 fish and chips. There’s a reason why this Icelandic Cod (the waiter said it was flown in daily) has been voted the best in Las Vegas for 35 years.

In-N-Out Burger

If you’re a fast food junkie, then In-N-Out Burger is the place to hit (multiple locations). Their official menu consists of a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a double-double (two patties), fries, and beverage (including shakes). There’s a reason they can keep their menu so simple and that’s because the few items they make, they make well. The store claims to not own a freezer, everything is so fresh. Even the lettuce is hand leafed and the fries cut at the restaurant location, one potato at a time.

Le Village Buffet In Paris For Brunch

If you’re looking for a splurge meal in Las Vegas, I suggest Le Village Buffet in the Paris Casino for brunch. By brunch, I mean go there at the tale end of the breakfast time (serves til 11 am) and then stay for lunch (starts at 11 am).

Why do this?

The selection is changed up so diners get to experience more (pace yourself) but most of all, the price for breakfast is $12.95, the price for lunch is $17.95. Yes, quite a difference. $5.00 per diner.

This technique can be used with many buffets as long as there isn’t a break between meals. Also check to see if you get a discount with a member’s/player’s card.

There are many, many other bargain meals in Las Vegas including $0.75 hotdogs at Gold Coast and $0.99 shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate (tradition started over 40 years ago) but Ellis Island, In-N-Out and Le Village Buffet are my favorites.
