Professional poker players, like you see on TV playing WPT, are exactly that: professionals. They make Texas Hold Em Poker look easy. The thing is, you have no idea what is going on in their brains. If you could know, you would probably be astonished of all the things they are thinking. They are going a million miles an hour, calculating and recalculating everything. They can do this because they have had so much practice a lot of it is automatic. The pro’s can do the fancy moves because they have had so much practice.

On top of their experience they have targeted knowledge. They know the probability tables back to front, they have studied human body language to read peoples faces better, they know ever single poker tip, trick and strategy in the book (heck some of the time they wrote the book). This knowledge, coupled with the countless hours of experience is how they do it.

So, sorry to break the bad news, but the only way to get good at poker, and anything for that matter, is to get targeted specific knowledge and then practice the implementation of that knowledge.

Another important point about playing poker: its all about reputation. If you have a reputation you can leverage that rep’ to be successful. Back to the pros, this is how they do it. They all have a reputation. Some have rep’s for playing all-in (so other players are constantly scared because at any time they might all-in), some have reps for playing super aggressive (so other players may not even both trying to play because they know they will have to bet a lot), and some are known for being super tight, or loose cannons. Whatever the rep’ they have, everyone knows them for something and they are leveraging that.

So no matter how many tips on holdem you find and learn, it won’t mean diddly-squat unless you actually practice the implementation of the knowledge. There is nothing that can replace countless hours in the poker rooms, playing hand after hand after hand. Have you ever heard the saying ‘practice makes perfect’? Well they lied to you, it doesn’t. ‘PERFECT practice makes perfect’. So when your practice, make sure you’re doing all those things you know you should, reading peoples hands, identifying the type and style, calculating odds, sticking to your strategy, building and maintaining a rep. Then you will find all the tips on holdem that you learnt finally start coming together.

Bankroll management encompasses three principles. First, protecting the corpus from erosion. Second, protecting against reversals after an advance. And third, achieving unrestrained growth.

Think of the concept this way. Losing is bad. Losing back your winnings is bad. But winning, and hanging on to winnings is good. This is the essence (and goal) of bankroll management.

Sound like stock market investing? You are right. Except that professional investors use seriously more sophisticated bankroll protection strategies than we will be considering.

Lots of poker players discount the notions of bankroll and money management. They subscribe to the theory that poker is a never ending game (as if the stock market is not) subject only to statistical certainty. Thus, you are just as likely as not, to win the next hand. If your skill is such that you would normally win; then you should keep playing, even if you are going broke.

Logically, I suppose their theory holds a little water, and my illustration was a bit oversimplified. Nevertheless, whether the game was Blackjack, Poker or Sit n Go Tournaments, bankroll management has always been an integral part of my winning play.

Many poker players also take issue with the money management systems that seek to overcome the ‘house edge’. No argument there. So, let’s move on. Here are two points upon which we can all agree. First, even in poker there is at least one edge against us, the poker room rake. And second, sometimes we can be our own worst enemy (edge).

Take for example, Stu Ungar, three time WSOP World Champion. During his short life, Stu won over $30 million. Indeed, he is the greatest No Limit player ever. But, Stu died with only $900. He was just one more among many of the world’s worst gamblers. Stu was his on worst enemy.

These five tips are broad, but they will accomplish our goal of protecting ourselves (bankroll) from ourselves, and from our other adversaries.

1) Do not quit while you are winning. (Regardless of the game.) Solid winning streaks are so infrequent, you should never quit one. Ever. This tip speaks to our desire for unrestrained growth.

2) Play within your skill level. Let your skill (and bankroll size) prescribe the Sit n Go buy-in level. This tip is based upon common sense, not rocket science.

3) Play at a meaningful money level. This means that the buy-in amount should be comfortable, as well as challenging. Not so low that a loss is ignored. Nor so high that you are sweating the entire game.

OK, the advice so far is pretty basic and generally available. Now, for some specifics:

4) Quit a losing streak quickly. I define a losing streak very narrowly. For me, that means quitting if I lose three out of four Sit n Go tourneys. Or, lose two in a row following a win. Or, three in a row without a win. Simply, I am willing to cede that something is wrong with my play. And, that I am probably too fatigued or distracted at that point to make any needed corrections. In the world of investing, this tactic is similar to placing a ’stop-loss’ limit.

5) Move up or down as your bankroll prescribes. If you are losing, move down in buy-in level. If you are winning, move up. Use good judgment based on benchmarks and ratios; and, try to take the action quickly, up or down. If you wait too long, you lose. This tip could be applied over the course of a session, and on a day-by-day basis. You can accomplish this tip by adopting a bankroll-to-buy-in ratio.

So, what does all this mean? If you are a relatively skillful player, you could start with a $100 deposit. Begin playing at the $5 buy-in level (20-to-1 ratio). Suffer a learning curve setback. Perhaps move down, but never have to make another deposit.

If you are a newbie, you have many months of learning ahead. Start at the micro-levels with a 100-to-1 ratio deposit, and work your way up carefully.

I love to play cards for money, especially games such as poker and bragg. In fact I have to admit that I love to gamble on many things such as betting on the outcome of football matches and on the outcome of horse races. My father used to take me to horse racing when I was a child which gave me the bug for gambling. In this article I concentrate on the card game of bragg and give free tips and advice about how you can increase your chances of winning.

The first thing I do when playing bragg is I take few hands where I basically play what I call very safe. I will basically open and look at most of the first say ten hands at the first opportunity. If I feel that I have a half decent hand I will then continue to play the hand and bet. At this stage I do not bet too aggressive as at this point I am merely weighing up how the other players on the table approach the game.

In bragg you have a number of different types of player. Some will seemingly always continue to bet blind and will hope that most of the other people will open and quickly fold. This type of player can at times be quite hard to play against and can even become quite annoying. Knowing that they are going to continue to bet blind in this way makes it quite a hard decision for you to make if you have had a look at your cards and have seen that you have been dealt a pair of say two’s. This hand is quite hard to assess, it can win many hands but in another way seems quite weak. To keep adding money to the pot takes a bit of bottle and your inner mind tells you to fold and wait for a better hand to arrive.

Other people play a very conservative game and will rarely bet blind for too long. When these people do actually place a bet after looking at their cards they more often than not go on to collect the money.

After I have spent some time assessing the types of player that I am playing with, I am then in a better position to know who to avoid when they have looked at their cards and then are betting. I am also then aware of who are the more daring of player, this is the player who of course likes to continue to play blind and this is the player who I will have more chance of winning money from.

If I am on a card table of six players, I always hope that at least three of the players are what I have described above as conservative players. I myself try to play a mixed game of conservative and aggressive, sometimes playing blind for a few hands and sometimes taking a look at my cards at the first chance. In this way I attempt to make it difficult for my opponents to assess how I play.

As a rule, when a conservative player has a look at his/her cards and then bets, this tells me that they must have a fairly good hand. I then will take a look at my cards and will then decide whether to bet or to throw the cards away. What happens quite a lot of the time is that the conservative players all look at their cards and then throw them away. This leaves me playing with two aggressive players and I will then bet blind with them for a few rounds hoping that one of them will eventually take a look at their cards. I of course want this player to fold, if they do I will then take a look at my own cards and bet even if I have only a king or ace high hand. In bragg there are a lot more rubbish hands than good. With only two players ace high is actually quite a good hand.

It is important not to let these over aggressive players bully you as this is what they want. Deal with them as in how you should deal with a bully in every day life, stand up to them as most of them are cowards at the end of the day. Good luck and enjoy your bragg. As in all forms of gambling, remember to only gamble what you can afford to lose.

There are many different ways poker players choose to play the game, however, there are certain basics you should attempt to adhere to. Now these may seem very simple and straight forward but it is amazing how many poker players out there simply dismiss them.

There are two ways to look at these poker tips, and because you want to become a better poker player this post is worth reading, first, you were unaware of these poker tips and you can use them to your advantage or second you are aware of them and you can watch for other poker players not adhering to them.

Simply put, the poker players not following these tips are obviously novices and will probably lose all there chips to the more experienced poker player.

Poker Tip 1. Wait to look at your cards

Our golden rule is to watch what other poker players are doing. How can you do this if you are looking at your cards? Wait until it is your turn to act then look at your cards, you should be concentrating on the players due to act before you, not on your own cards. The only time you should look straight away is under the gun (first to act sitting next to the big blind), but still, you can look for players after you that have already checked their cards.

Poker Tip 2. Do not lift your cards from the table

We’ve all seen it on TV, cover your cards with one hand and only raise enough of the cards to know their value and suit. Do not lift the cards off the table to get a better look. This opens the door to showing your opponents both your cards and your tells.

Poker Tip 3. Act in turn.

I don’t really know why I have this tip here, because if you follow poker tip 1, you shouldn’t be able to act out of turn as you haven’t seen your cards yet. However, to become a better poker player you must realise you can watch for players meaning to act after you and get a read on their possible actions. Just because you will choose to act in turn doesn’t mean your opponents will. Keep an eye out for that opponents holding their cards ready to muck out of turn.

Poker Tip 4. Only look at your cards once

Only look at your cards once and make every effort to show no emotion. You only have two cards to remember, if you can’t remember the value and suit of two cards you looked at 30 seconds ago you have a lot of homework to do to become a better poker player. Besides, you should be spending as much time as possible watching your opponents rather than watching your own cards. Furthermore, see if you can work out a consistent amount of time to look at them. Eg. Try for 3 seconds every hand. A poker tell can be picked up by the amount of time a player looks at their cards. Consistency is the key, regardless how strong or weak your hand is.

Poker Tip 5. Showing your cards

There is an art for showing your cards. Professional poker players show their cards at certain times for definite reasons, they have a plan in mind and are attempting to set a trap. Don’t get sucked into showing your hand unless you have set out to purposely do so. You will find many poker players suggest you never show your hand – keep your opponent guessing. This is good advice if you have not set a plan. Wanting your opponents to believe you bluff a lot, or only play with very strong hands or even attempting to put a player on tilt are a few good reasons to show your hands. Stroking your ego is definitely no reason to show your hand.

We can post hundreds of poker strategies and tips here on how to become a better poker player and they are all valuable. You can find them all over the internet and even from your opponents. BUT, these tips and poker strategies are useless unless you implement them into your poker game. You should want them to become second nature, embed them into your subconscious.

It is a matter of being aware of your surroundings and most importantly aware of yourself. You are destined to become better poker player if you start to focus on you, your mindset and how you approach the game.
